The handwritten letter from Grand Duke Nikolai Nikolaevich the Elder (1831-1891) and envelope written in Russian to Court Physician Sergey Botkin and inquiring about the treatment of the Grand Duke's lover, ballerina Ekaterina Gavrilovna Chislova (1846-1889), contained in a folded blue cardboard envelope with a tipped in label identifying the correspondent in Russian pre-Revolutionary orthography. Ekaterina Chislova was a talented ballerina who rose to the ranks of the Imperial Ballet and was a partner to Feliks Kshesinski, father of the dancer Matilda, who would later join the Imperial Family. She died of esophageal cancer at only 43 years of age. She had five children with the Grand Duke and Emperor Alexander III granted them hereditary nobility under the surname of Nikolaev.
