Description
African, Makonde Tribe (Tanzania), 20th century. Hand carved ebony or blackwood (mpingo) wood figural sculpture in depicting a Tree of Life or Family Tree scene (Ujamaa) with overlapping and stacked figures including some inverted, supporting one another, and of varied size in a singular column, largest figure at top (likely representing a tribal chief). Underside with impressed numbers and "F" marks, otherwise unmarked. Overall approximate height 22.5". Provenance: From the Estate of Channing S. Jun, M.D., Eastman, Georgia.
Condition
Wear commensurate to age and use. Some surface scratching, minor soiling, minor abrasions, and some chipping to base. One chip and loss to one figure. Some cracking, likely inherent to wood. Typical shelf wear to bottom. No other visible signs of damage or repair.
