Description
South America, Peru, ca. late 16th to 17th century CE. High relief carved wood Christian religious decorative plaque, perhaps from a church or chapel. It shows the archangel Michael before the Virgin Mary and the infant Christ. The two adult figures wear sumptuously carved robes; the angel has large wings. Facial details are still clear as are smaller ones such as carving to the feet and hair. The piece has been framed on a red velvet background some time in the past. Size with frame: 15-1/4" W x 12-1/2" H (38.7 cm x 31.8 cm).
Provenance: Ex-Private New York Collection; ex-private Thomas M. Messer collection, former director of the Guggenheim Museum, acquired 1970's.
