Rufino Tamayo (Mexican, 1899-1991)
Tamayo was born in Mexico in 1899 and was incredibly influenced by Zapotec heritage. His native country is present in most of his works. Tamayo created the bulk of his work between 1925 and 1991, developing his graphic techniques and where he invented a new medium, called mixographia. In 1981, the Tamayo Contemporary Art Museum was established to hold the collections he and his wife had amassed during their lives.
