Description
ROBERT J. WICKENDEN (BRITISH-CANADIAN-AMERICAN, 1861-1931) ROXBURY, NEW YORK PAINTING, oil on canvas, a beautiful depiction of a two-story white-painted clapboard house with green shutters in late summer/early fall, signed and dated lower left, also signed, inscribed, and dated, likely in the artist's hand, on stretcher verso "Residence of Mr. and Mrs. George Shaver / Main St. Roxbury N. Y. / Painted by Robert J. Wickenden / Sept. 1923". Housed in an old molded-composition gilt fame. Circa 1923. 15 1/2" x 19 1/2" sight, 17 1/2" x 21 1/2" OA.
Painting in very good condition with minor abrasions and a few small surface losses. Wear and losses to frame.
Catalogue Note: Born in England to American parents, Robert J. Wickenden (1861-1931) immigrated to the U. S. at age 13. Ultimately establishing himself as a portrait, landscape, and genre painter, Wickenden studied in Europe and exhibited his work widely as a young man, including participation in events at the Paris Salon, the National Academy of Design, and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. Known for his many Canadian scenes, Wickenden also painted a number of portraits of noteworthy figures in his day, perhaps the most recognized being his likeness of King Edward VII, now housed at the Parliament Building in Ottawa. The present example, executed later in the artist's life, demonstrates his fine abilities as landscape painter and architectural draftsman.
