FREDERICK CATHERWOOD (BRITISH, 1799-1854) PRINTS OF MAYAN RUINS, LOT OF TWO, tinted lithographs on paper, two prints total, one example titled "Colossal Head at Izamal, Mexico" (Plate XXV), and another titled "Principal Court of the Palace at Palenque" (Plate VII). Each professionally matted and housed under glass in a modern giltwood, Mayan-style frame. Circa 1844. Colossal Head example 11 1/4" x 15" image, 23" x 26 1/2" OA.
Prints in excellent condition with very minor scattered areas of foxing/spotting. Not examined out of frames.
Provenance: From a Virginia estate collection.
Catalogue Note: Frederick Catherwood (1799-1854) was an interesting architect, painter of historical scenes, and archaeologist. Born in London, he trained as an architect at a young age, but eventually turned to travel, archaeology, and art as a career. He traveled extensively around the world exploring ancient sites in Italy, Greece, Egypt, and Central America. His "Views of Ancient Monuments in Central America, Chiapus, and Yucatan", published in 1844 and from which the present prints are taken, was his most successful and influential work. He exhibited at the Royal Academy and in New York City during his lifetime, and his work is today represented in the British Museum and the Yale University Art Gallery.
