Antonio Ligabue (1899-1965)
Born in Zurich, Antonio Ligabue was discovered and promoted by Marino Mazzacurati, a co-founder of the Scuola Romana. Only in 1961, however, he had his first exhibition in Rome, through which he gained international notoriety. He created mainly landscapes and hunting scenes, as well as tiger depictions and self-portraits. His style shows influences by Henri Rousseau, Vincent van Gogh, and expressionism.
Because of his mental instability and several sanatorium stays, Ligabue was posthumously called a representative of ‘Art Brut’. Works by the artist can be found at the Museum of his city of residence, Gualtieri in the Po Valley. In 1978, the Italian film director Salvatore Nocita produced a film on Ligabue’s life. (cko)
