Description
GOLF IN BABYVILLE (Chicago Tribune, April 21, 1901)Left (Obverse) 1901-0 MS-64 (Graded by PCGS); Right (Reverse) 1900-0 MS-64 (Graded by PCGS); SIZE: 32 ¾ X 25 ¾ This illustration features four scenes “From Photographs of Models Posed for The Tribune.” The “photographs” were “touched up” using gum bichromate, an agent allowing illustrators to use brushes and sponges in the darkroom to add texture and remove unwanted details. The scenes depict a bag with a Scotch design on it (recalling the Scottish-origin of the sport) and the number “4.” Dominating the page is a young girl about to tee off, and she’s wearing a tam-‘o-shanter cap with a feather fashionably and boldly sticking out from it. The wide-eyed boy behind her, a caddy, stares in apparent wonder at the girl in the purple skirt.
