Description
Pre-Columbian, Peru (North Coast), Moche Culture, ca. 100 to 700 CE. This is a large terracotta portrait vessel of a seated man with interesting, three-dimensional details all the way around the body, including his hands held behind his back as if he is a captive -- a common theme of Moche artwork! He wears a cream-colored necklace and has wide eyes with cream-colored whites, giving him a staring appearance. There is some evidence remaining for a darker red paint, especially in the form of facial details. Size: 5.25" W x 11.2" H (13.3 cm x 28.4 cm)
