Lapis lazuli
The most important deposits of lapis lazuli (Arab-Latin ‘blue stone’) since 6000 years is located in the western Hindu Kush mountain range in Afghanistan. Under simple conditions and in rough terrain lapis lazuli is obtained there as irregular deposit in limestone. Since prehistoric times, lapis lazuli was used for jewelry making. In the Middle Ages it was also used as a dye for ultramarine. In some pompous buildings and churches, there are inlays, wall paneling and pillar overlays made of lapis lazuli.
