Eugene Bourgeois (1855-1909) "Devant un village Provencal" Oil on Panel. Signed lower left. A shepherdess and her flock on a rural path before a village in Provence. Professionally Framed. Eugene Bourgeois was born in Paris in 1855 and died in Saint-Cast in 1909. Self-taught, Bourgeois exhibited at the Paris Salon, showing Arm of a River in 1874, Part of the Forest in 1880 and The Little Bridge at Gravoteaux, Seine-et-Marne in 1882. He gained a third-class medal in 1885, and bronze medals in 1889 and 1900 (Exposition Universelle). Bourgeois style, with its wonderful colours and delicate touches led to many important official commissions from numerous cities and towns in France. He painted some large decorative panels for the city hall in Paris, Orsay and Invalides railway stations, and for the town halls of Choisy, Bagneux and Clichy. He was well known for his light filled landscapes of Normandy, the Camargue, Italy and the Maghreb. Eugene Bourgeois works can be found in the museums of Digne, Lille, Nimes, Museum of Modern Art in Paris, Museum Carnavalet in Paris and Troyes Museum.
