Description
"Portrait of Massachusetts Governor Samuel Shute" oil on cradled board, 29 x 24 1/2 inches. framed. Note: Historically important which retains a June 14, 1929 receipt for $8000.00 and detailed letter of provenance from Robert C. Vose Paintings, Boston. Other supporting documents include a 1929 newspaper clipping appealing to the public to keep the portrait in Massachusetts as well as a 1930 MFA Boston exhibition receipt and notes on the history of Samuel Shute. Various inscribed labels are affixed verso. A copy of this painting was made in the 1930's and currently hangs in the Massachusetts State House.
Condition
No apparent major restorations, in good overall condition, laid to cradled masonite.
