Description
The Bronze repoussed to a modeled in the form of a caparisoned standing figure of an elephant, the head slightly facing right shoulder, Carrying a GU vase atop the blanket with an inverted neck and flared rim candle holder on its back. The blanket wealthy decorated with colorful cloisonne against its turquoise blue ground of Early Buddhist treasures "BaJiXiang". While the Gu vase adorned with dense of scrolling floral motif against deep cobalt blue ground. All contrast reserved in gilt elephants body.

Mark on side of pedestal, four gilt script -KaiShu- characters, enclosed by a rectangular cartouche, QianLong Reign Period.

The elephant is sometimes shown carrying a "treasure" vase (bao ping) on its back. Since the word "vase" (ping ) has the same pronunciation as the word for "peace" (Ping'an ), the implied meaning is "may you have 'good luck' (elephant) and 'peace' (vase)". In Chinese art, the elephant is a symbol of wisdom and strength. Elephant is also considered as a sacred animal in Buddhist traditions. Buddha is often depicted riding an elephant. This magnificent creatures are also regarded as auspicious figures in Thailand.

The word for elephant in Chinese is written and pronounced the same as the Chinese word for 'sign' or 'things to come' therefore people like to pairing elephants with certain symbols to create a kind of pun. People also use a stone elephant to emphasize the concept of power or strength while an elephant with a vase is interpreted as a sign of peaceful times. In Chinese, the words for 'vase' and 'peace' have close pronunciations. Elephants carrying vases on their backs were featured in parades to celebrate the Emperor's birthday during the Qing dynasty.
