Description
Large antique Chinese glazed porcelain vase decorated with five-clawed dragons chasing a pearl in the clouds. 19th century or earlier. This vase is unmarked but has an old fragmentary paper note in English attached to the bottom relating a story concerning provenance. The glazed, painted designs are in a dark reddish brown and consist of two dragons, heads and claws visible, but bodies mostly obscured by clouds. The surface of the glaze has become slightly iridescent, likely from age, and in the thicker areas of painting the glaze has an almost matte crystalline quality. The painting is stylized and detailed. Please note that the neck has some unfinished professional restoration. Please see below for information concerning the attached note.
SIZE: Height - 16 7/8” (43 cm) / Diameter (widest) - 10” (25.5 cm)
WEIGHT: 8 lbs. 9 oz.
PROVENANCE: Fragmentary paper label attached to bottom of vase. Note appears to date to the late 19th or early 20th century. A photograph of the label, from the past when it was more complete, appears to read: “ (indistinct) … tiger skin vase with five clawed dragon. Stolen from the Imperial Palace Chinese … (No on)e in China is allowed … the five clawed dr(agon) … (indistinct)” The label has incurred losses since the photo was taken (please see the photo of the full bottom of the vase for present condition of the note).
