SIZE: 7” x 5.5” x 2” (18 cm x 14 cm x 5 cm)
PROVENANCE: Purchased at a San Francisco estate sale in 2006. Private collection.
NOTES / REFERENCES: Very few of these boxes are known in Rockwell Kent collections. The original image was designed by Kent in 1928 for an A.G. Spalding & Bros. magazine advertisement. Subsequently, A.G. Spaulding & Bros. had the image etched onto a very small number of wood-lined brass cigar boxes for use as gifts to friends and business associates. The image depicts Rockwell Kent’s second wife, Frances. Although Rockwell Kent was commissioned for the design, Kent himself never received one of these boxes from A.G. Spalding & Bros..
