Description
Tennessee oil on canvas by Madeline Scott (Knoxville, TN, early 20th century), still life depicting a violin and sheet music with books. Signed "Madeline Scott" lower right. Housed in a gilt wooden frame. Sight - 17 1/2" H x 24" W. Framed - 19 3/4" H x 26 3/4" W. 1st quarter 20th century. Lot also includes a book associated with the painter titled "The Monastery" by Sir Walter Scott, 1885. Inscription in the book reads, "Madeline Scott Freeman was the wife of A. L. Freeman. A. L. Freeman was the son of my great aunt Susan Branson Freeman. On August 3rd, 1952 Mayme Freeman Baker, sister of A. L. Freeman gave me this book/ Dorothy Stephenson Theile". 8" H x 5 1/2" W. Note: One "still life" by Madeline Scott is listed in the "Catalogue FIne Arts Section" of the Appalachian Exposition of 1910. She is also listed in "American Art Directory", Volume 10, 1913 and later married A. L. Freeman, the nephew of artist Enoch Lloyd Branson. Provenance: Descendant of Branson family. 1 1/2" line of damage to canvas above violin bridge, small scuffs to canvas around top right of canvas.
