Item Details
Description
1st item: FISHER, Richard S. The Book of the World; Being an Account of All Republics, Empires, Kingdoms, and Nations, in Reference to their Geography, Statistics, Commerce, &c. Together with a Brief Historical Outline of their Rise, Progress and Present Condition, &c, &c, &c. New York: J.H. Colton, 1850. 6 1/2" H X 9 3/4" W (Octavo). Vol. 1, 624 Pages plus large folding chart and large folding map; Vol. 2, 721 Pages plus both large folding maps. 100% complete. Second edition. Both volumes bear annotations by the previous owner, John Davis. Davis has signed the ffep in pencil in volume two. He has also noted that the books are "not at all reliable" on the title page of volume one. His annotations in volume one show a bit of disdain for the text. In a few instances he simply writes "lie" in the margin. Books give an interesting look at the state of the population in the United States as of 1850. Each state listing includes the number of "slaves" and/or "colored persons" as part of the population information. 2nd item: BRYANT, William Cullen. Picturesque America or the Land We Live In. New York: Appleton and Company, 1872. 10 1/2" H X 12 3/4" W (Folio). Vol. 1, 568 Pages; Vol. 2, 576 Pages. Two Volumes Complete. First Edition Set. Original Morocco leather with elaborate blind stamping to covers. Title work on spine and cover in gold gilt. All edges gold gilt. (Additional high-resolution photos are available at www.caseantiques.com)
