Description
Vintage British Naval Military Biography. "An Admiral Never Forgets", by Vice Admiral Humphrey Hugh Smith. HARDCOVER ND (1936) J. B. Lippincott & Company 1st American edition, 1st printing; w/ no additional printings on copyright page. Exactly as shown in the listing scan(s). Nice Collectible 1st American edition, 1st printing hardcover copy. "The memoirs of the author who entered the Royal Navy in 1885 via the "Britannia" and during the next 37 years on the Active List he served in many ships all over the world including "Tamar," "Victoria", "Nile", "Pheasant", "Benbow", "Majectic", "Pyramus", "Conflict", "Berwick", "Seagull", "Cochrane", etc. It is less serious than some other reminiscences but no less interesting. Admiral Smith gives a chatty and anecdotal account as he spends his time "on meditating on my utterly misspent but thoroughly enjoyable past in company with the best lot of fellows that ever wore trousers." His observations of naval life in the last days of the Victorian Navy, the troublesome days leading up to war in 1914, through that conflict and on to the 1920's, are very much to the point and never dull. After the war the author was appointed Captain of the RN College at Greenwich. He gives an account of the tragic loss of the submarine L24." Illustrated with photos on warships he served in. Small abrasion from price sticker removal on first blank endpaper, o/w internally tight & unmarked. Binding Exterior; all lettering/decoration bright. NO REMAINDER MARK; NOT X-LIBRARY. No DJ present.
