An Intricate Taino 'Three Pointer' Zemi
c. 1000 - 1500 AD

The black dense stone image is shaped with a slightly concave base tapering to each end and a tall center ornately drilled, incised, pecked, and ground with a bold deity face. To the front, the image shows deeply recessed eye sockets below a menacing furling forehead, a sloping contoured nose, and a wide gaping fish-like mouth. The face is topped with a conical head covering showing intricately carved and incised abstract embellishments depicting monkeys, avian and sea creatures, while the ears with ear flares are exposed on either side.
