Description
Country: Netherlands. Year: 1970s. Artist: Lampe George, Pot Robert, Zwartjes Hans. The ‘Vrije Academie’ (or Free Academy) is an art academy in The Hague founded in 1947. On the first of March 1964 George Lampe, only having teached at the Vrije Academie for a few years, is appointed assistent director. One of the deciding factors was his ability to work well together with Livinus van de Bundt, the director and founder of the academy. From that moment on Livinus’ ideas about using technology and new media come to fruition. George and Livinus design the ‘New Style Vrije Academie’. This new style introduces a whole series of new classes on a variety of subjects; TV, cinematography, scenography, electronic music and kinetic art. Every form of selection was rejected within the ‘new style’, to ensure that as many students as possible could join in. This was the way that art and creativity could be integrated in daily life most intensively. In 1968 Livinus resigned his position as director of the Vrije Academie, and George Lampe took over. Lampe wanted to offer artists (professionals and amateurs) a place to develop themselves optimally. To enforce this ideal the academy changed its name to ‘Psychopolis’ in 1970. The success came in the following years, when the student numbers rose to 2500. Lampe was director of the academy until his death in 1982.Size (cm): 88x61. Good condition, folding marks, minor tears and faint creases in margins.
