Sir Robert Ker Porter was appointed "historical painter" by the Tsar of Russia and was married to a Russian princess. When Napoleon invaded Russia he Porter accompanied the Tsar's headquarters and wrote of his experiences in this book. The two maps detail Napoleon's advance across Russia to Moscow, and his subsequent retreat.
