Pinart's account, read at a meeting of the Société held at Paris on 18 Oct. 1876, of a journey to Arizona which began at Los Angeles toward the end of December 1875 and ended at San Diego on 15 April 1876. The purpose of his trip was to visit ancient Indian ruins. Streeter comments that "Phoenix was then a little village of about 300 people of whom about half were Mexicans, and the Southern Pacific railroad to Arizona had only progressed a short distance beyond San Bernardino. As yet there was no railroad connection between Los Angeles and San Francisco." The map is "Californie Méridionale et Arizona pour suivre le voyage De A. Pinart 1875-1876," measuring 15x21.5 cm. It has some darkening, and neatly split through at two folds. Formerly in the Bancroft Library, with bookplate on inside front wrapper, a few withdrawn rubberstamps, spine rebacked with tape. Streeter 522.
