Description
** A portion of the proceeds from the sale of this lot will benefit The Fowler Museum at UCLA **
Native American, Pacific Northwest, Alaska, Inuit Eskimos, ca. early 20th century CE. This type of eye gear was traditionally used by people of the Arctic to protect from snow blindness. Carved from Caribou bone to fit the wearer's face, these goggles have horizontal slits that are quite narrow so that only light will filter through the slits. The slits are this narrow in order to improve the wearer's visual acuity by reducing the glare. A nice, early example. Size: 6.25" L x 1.25" W (15.9 cm x 3.2 cm)
Provenance: Ex-private Morgan collection, Santa Monica, CA
