Description

Europe, Holland, 17th century CE. This is a large fragment of an early Dutch majolica plate or platter. Majolica is a white tin-glazed pottery with an interesting global history. Also known as maiolica, it was first developed in the Islamic Middle East and brought to Europe by trade in Venice and the invasion of the Moors in Spain. The name came from Italy and Italian artisans spread the method as well as Chinese style designs like the border on this plate to the north. Size: 13.6" L x 10.75" W x 2" H (34.5 cm x 27.3 cm x 5.1 cm).
