Fifteen (15) (nine [9] unique) items related to the death and mourning of President James A. Garfield, following assassination by Charles Guiteau. Comprises: 1.) 18-page 8vo framed sermon by James G. Blaine. Dated February, 27th, 1882. 2.) Printed, small 8-page 4to sermon titled, "The Unanswered Prayer" by Mortimer Blake. Dated September 25, 1881. 3.) Six copies of a sermon by Rev. John D. Stokes dated September 26th, 1881. 4.) Pink handbill announcing a September 6th special prayer meeting in the town of Defiance [P.A.?] 5.) Handbill/circular announcing Garfield's assassination to the town of Amesbury, MA. 6.) Small handbill announcing the president's death. 7.) Larger handbill announcing the same. 8.) Embossed chromolithographic card, part of "The President Series" featuring Lincoln, Grant, Garfield, & Cleveland. 9.) Printed invitation to a memorial service, dated February 27th, 1882.
Condition
All in fair to good condition. Both sermons exhibit various examples of minor age toning, spotting, soiling, and margin defects. Both handbills exhibit even age toning, margin defects and folds/tears, and some smudges. "President Series" card in good condition, no major defects. Invitation exhibits even toning, but is very well preserved, with likely-original envelope. Amesbury handbill in poor condition. See photos. Dimensions: Largest - 6.00 " H x 9.75 " W. Smallest - 2.13 " H x 4.00 " W. Provenance: The Estate of Dr. Alan York.
