Hand-colored lithograph Rant-Che-Wai-Me, Female Flying Pigeon Published by E,C. Biddle, Philadelphia, 1837. Identified in inscriptions in the matrix.Rant-Che-Wai-Me, Female Flying Pigeon, is from a three-volume folio series sponsored by Thomas McKenney and James Hall, entitled History of the Indian Tribes of North America. Lehman & Duvall were the lithographers after paintings by Charles Bird King, who was employed by the War Department to paint the Indian delegates visiting President Monroe in Washington, D.C., in 1824. Flying Pigeon or Rant-Che-Wai-Me accompanied her husband, Iowa chief Mahaska. Purchased in the 1960s from The Wiley Gallery, High Street, Hartford, Ct. Framed and matted with Gallery Label en verso. In frame 16x20x1. Wt. 3 pds 10 oz. PROVENANCE: The estate of a Litchfield Connecticut Antique and Fine Art Dealer.
