1281-1285 AD. An early discoid papal bulla seal of the French Pope Martin IV with two bearded faces to one face, 'SPA.SPE' above; to the other, 'MAR/TINVS/PP. IIII'. 44 grams, 39mm (1 1/2") Property of an Essex collector; acquired in the 1960s; thence by descent. Hammond, B. Benet's Medieval Artefacts of England & The United Kingdom, Witham, 2015, p.421, item LS-22754. Pope Martin IV was born Simon de Brion at the château of Meinpincien, France, in the decade 1210-20 and was pope from 21 February 1281 to his death in 1285.
