Description
Indonesia, Bali or Java, 19th century CE. This is a hand carved wood mask with uplifted, staring eyes and a pronounced, flat nose. The face is painted a creamy white, with black and red details and yellow eyes. There is no lower jaw, just two upper teeth below a curved, open, lip. This mask is from the centuries-old Topeng tradition, made to be worn during the dramatic dances enacted in Bali and to a lesser extent Java that depict traditional stories of kings, princes, heroes, and myths. Size: 5.25" W x 4.75" H (13.3 cm x 12.1 cm)
