Mary Bauermeister (Germany and New York, b. 1934), "Sketch for Tanglewood" assemblage, ca. 1966 CE. An impressive assemblage comprised of lithograph and photo collage, printed in colors on wove paper by Chiron Press, housed in a lucite case adorned with shells, stones, and hemispherical, domed forms inscribed with poetic text attached in a unique arrangement, part of a treasured New York International Portfolio published by Tanglewood Press that featured internationally renowned artists Arman, Oyvind Fahlstrom, Mary Bauermeister, Allen Jones and John Goodyear famed Americans Motherwell, James Rosenquist, and Ad Reinhardt. Note: the portfolio introduction was written by none other than the renowned Metropolitan Museum curator Henry Geldzahler. Signed and numbered in ink from the edition of 225 (78/225) at bottom center by the famed German-born artist who achieved success in the New York Pop Art scene. This fabulous piece demonstrates Bauermeister's sixties Pop Art, Fluxus, as well as DADA influences. Bauermeister was born in Cologne, Germany in 1934, and after achieving great success in Europe including exhibitions at Stedelikk Museum moved to New York City in 1962 where she became integral to the Pop Art, Fluxus, and Nouveau Realisme movements and moved circles that included Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg, and Jean Tinguely. The following description, originally published in Geldzahler's introduction, affixed to the verso, offers a detailed explanation of the materials and process, "Bauermeister: A photolithographed calligraphic drawing with cut-out photographs collaged (from a Bauermeister catalogue). More than mere collage, this is assemblage; two piles of Sicilian stones, glued in conical piles to be fixed where one wishes; two wooden, hand painted and lettered domes; two mor stones, culled from nature, configured like an imaginary moonscape; and finally an enlarging lens - all to be fixed ad liv on the framing glass above the surface of the print."
