The frontispiece is a quite handsome lithographed panoramic view of Quebec. The purpose of the author's travels was to survey the strength of the U.S. Navy in order to ascertain what position it was in to challenge Britain's domination of the seas. Although he found developments in America impressive, his final opinion, after visiting most of the coast from Washington northward, was that claims for American naval strength were exaggerated.
