Oil on canvas painting of a rabbi instructing a boy in Torah lessons as presumably, his father looks on. This painting is most likely one of his works done in Russian and brought to the U.S.

Condition: Under UV inspection, no restoration done. A tight 1" split at top right over the stretcher bar.
History: Simka Simkhovitch was born in Petrograd, Ukraine, on May 21, 1893. He studied art at the Odessa Art School from age 15 to 20, then continued his education at the Royal Academy of St. Petersburg. His talent was so highly regarded that, upon graduation in 1918, he was selected by the students to teach drawing and painting at the Royal Academy. During his time in Russia he won an award from the new Soviet government for a painting on a revolutionary theme. His works are to this day included in two museums in Petrograd. In 1924 he settled in the USA. Personal exhibitions of the artist were held in M. Stemer (1927, 1928, 1929, 1931) and Middletown (1940) New York galleries. In 1932 was awarded the Harris 2nd prize and the bronze medal of the Art Institute of Chicago, in 1933 – the 3rd prize of the Art Museum of Wooster. Was a member of the Brooklyn Union of Artists. In 1930-s gave lessons in his own school. The artist's works are exhibited in the American Art Museum of Whitney in New York and the National Museum in Krakow.
