Description
Blade: 31.0" This heavy, curved blade has a gilt-brass hilt and scabbard decoration with a brass chain extending from cross-guard to pommel. The grip has a shield on either side, an eyelet in the pommel, and floral design on the mounts along the scabbard. The long chape has a sword and shield design along it, as well as a quiver of arrows before the shield and flags behind it. At the base of that gilt-brass chape is a vase of lightning bolts. The blade is made of figured steel. Shield escutcheon inlaid into the ribbed horn handle. Panoply of arms on the drag, collector's tag on the bolster, #44.

History: Swords such as these became popular during the late 18th, early 19th Centuries when Europe truly began military interactions with the Middle East. Napoleon raised a number of Mamluk units for his campaigns in Egypt, leading to the incorporation of the Mameluke style of blade into modern military dress.
