Item Details
Description
This cane or walking stick is made of branch wood with a copper ferrule and iron collar. The shaft appears mostly unworked, but the grip is a carved head of a man in a hood with white and brown painted eyes. Beneath the collar is a pair of eyelets, through which is a string forming a lanyard.

Provenance:
Condition: Light rubbing and natural roughness with expected faults from its raw nature. Mild gouging and scratching to the grip from use and age.
History: Canes were a popular accessory to the fashion minded far more than as an actual ambulatory aid during the 18th and 19th Centuries, dying out as a stable by the early 20th Century. Interestingly, the size of the ferrule, the metal cap on the base of a cane, is a fairly accurate measure of dating the cane, as by the 18th century, it began to shorten with the advent of maintained road systems and paved paths.
