Description
This oak wood cane or walking stick has an brass cap over a glass thermometer. Along the side of the cane are the words "Wayne County Road Commission."
In 1909, the Wayne County Road Commission paved the first mile of concrete road in the United States. It was to be only one of many achievements for this pioneering government body.
Wayne County is the most populous county in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2010 census, its population was 1,820,584, making it the 19th-most populous county in the United States.[3] The 2014 Census update listed the county's population at 1,764,804.[4] The county seat is Detroit,[5] the most populous city in Michigan and 18th-most populous city in the United States. The county was founded in 1796 and organized in 1815.

History: Canes were a popular accessory to the fashion minded far more than as an actual ambulatory aid during the 18th and 19th Centuries, dying out as a stable by the early 20th Century. Interestingly, the size of the ferrule, the metal cap on the base of a cane, is a fairly accurate measure of dating the cane, as by the 18th century, it began to shorten with the advent of maintained road systems and paved paths.
