1929 Chevrolet Imperial Landau Convertible
1929 Chevrolet Imperial Landau Convertible
Item Details
Description
Specifications:
46bhp, 194 cu. in. overhead valve inline six-cylinder engine, three-speed manual transmission, solid front axle with semi-elliptic leaf springs, live rear axle with semi-elliptic leaf springs, four-wheel mechanical drum brakes. Wheelbase: 107"

1929 marked the introduction of Chevrolet's new overhead-valve six-cylinder engine, the "Cast Iron Wonder" that would remain in production for 35 years. Although Ford's Model A, which was $75 cheaper, outsold it within two years, the more sophisticated Chevrolet overtook its Blue Oval competition shortly thereafter.

Of the various models offered, the most desirable and expensive was the Imperial Landau Convertible, a four-door, five-passenger car with a folding top at the rear. Priced at $725, it offered cowl lamps, walnut inlay window garnish moldings, and rich mohair upholstery and headliner as standard equipment. Exclusive to the Landau was an exterior color combination of Crockett Brown with Mistino Gray, accented with orange pin striping on the wheels and body. The folding top, which featured functional landau irons, could be ordered in tan Haartz cloth or black leatherette.

The Landau Convertible offered here was the recipient of a complete and professional, high-quality restoration conducted to concours standards. Painted in the correct color scheme with orange accent striping, it has a tan cloth top and light brown wheels with orange striping. All the wood in the body was replaced and every element was properly refurbished or replaced. The interior has been professionally upholstered and coordinates nicely with the exterior color scheme. Meanwhile, the engine compartment is clean and well detailed and the engine itself is of the correct grey color with the manifolds and accessories remaining in excellent condition. It should be noted that this Imperial Landau is accompanied by original repair, parts, and owner's manuals as well as an extensive appraisal conducted in 2007 and complete restoration documentation, including bills and receipts.

With a body style typically reserved for such exclusive marques as Packard, Rolls-Royce, and the like, the Chevrolet Imperial Landau Convertible offered a sense of automotive distinction to the average American. Regardless of its comparative affordability, however, sightings of Imperial Landaus were few and far between as only 350 units were ever produced. This particular example is surely one of the finer ones in existence and is well suited as a significant museum display or a deserving trophy winner at any show.
