Prideaux John Selby (English, 1788-1867), "Little Bittern"-circa 1820, hand colored engraving on wove paper, with inscription to lower margin "Little Bittern, 1, Male, 2, Young after second moult", with plate number inscription to upper right "V1". Ornithological print on paper depicting two wading Bitttern birds (of the heron family), in verdant marshy landscape. With scattered graphite inscriptions to upper margin recto. Framed approximately 23.25” x 29". Sheet approximately 20" x 25.825". Note: Prideaux John Selby was a contemporary of John James Laforest Audubon (American, 1785-1851), perhaps the best known ornithological printmaker in history. Selby was a botanist and natural historian in addition to being a noted ornithologist. He is best known for his ornithological publication Illustrations of British Ornithology (1821-1834).
