Description
Chinese School, Qing Dynasty, last half 19th century. Group of two Chinese export (intended for Western consumption) gouache on pith paper figural paintings, each with heavy and ornate carved wood frames, comprising "Court Scene", depicting an interior court scene with Emperor, Regent or Prime Minister surrounded by his aids and advisors in an elaborately decorated room, with two dragons spanning upper margin (a reference to the Qing Dynasty flag); and "Ladies of the Court", depicting an interior court scene with the Empress in elaborate robe, seated in throne before a large scale image of a peacock, the Empress surrounded by her attendants. Each framed approximately 17" x 23". Each sheet approximately 14.925" x 7.25". Note: this works may have originally been contained in a Chinese export souvenir book.
