Description
After Giambologna (Flemish/ Italian, 1529-1608), circa 19th century. "Rape of the Sabine Women", gilt bronze, apparently unsigned. Tabletop gilt bronze sculpture after the original 16th century marble carving currently held at the Loggia dei Lanzi in Florence's Piazza della Signoria, the bronze depicting the Classical story of the Rape of the Sabine Women and comprising three figures: a Roman male holding a distraught Sabine woman aloft with a cowering Sabine warrior underfoot, the figures to a naturalistic rocky integral base and surmounting a gray marble plinth. Approximate height 31", width (of base) 6", depth (of base) 6". Note: alternate spellings of artist's name Jean Boulogne, Giovanni da Bologna, Giovanni Bologna.
