Description
Greece, ca. 18th to 19th century CE. An antique wooden icon depicting a bishop saint, given his garments, halo, and the Gospel he holds, in bold jewel tones and a gold leafed halo. The name inscription is not entirely clear. A lovely, balanced composition, painted in a resurrected Byzantine style, with strong lines, the figure quite near the picture plane, and pantomime-like pose and gesturing. Size: 7.75" L x 5.75" W (19.7 cm x 14.6 cm)
