North America, United States, ca. 1875 CE. A finely woven coverlet or bedcover, a geometric as opposed to a figured and fancy design, comprised of wool and cotton - the wool most likely hand-spun and dyed with natural dyes in hues of autumnal orange, grassy green, and jet black, the cotton machine-spun and left undyed - with cotton fringe on one end. Since most 19th century looms were relatively narrow, coverlets were made of two woven panels joined together with a center seam, as is the case with this example. Many geometric coverlets were even comprised of three panels with two seams; this example, however, is comprised of two with one seam where the weaver had to weave the entire length of the coverlet twice and then hand sew these pieces together to create a textile wide enough to cover a bed.
