Description
Netsuke, ivory, Bronze, gold, glass. Japan, 19th cent.
The black islander is crafted in bronze and as usual naked except for a loincloth. He has curly hair and relaxes on a red coral that has more the shape of a long pillow. He is wearing golden rings on his arms and legs, his eye is inlaid in gold, beside him is a tobacco bag and he holds a kiseru (Japan. pipe), also golden.  The figure is lying on the ivory like in a cave, defined porous structure below him. This rectangular, well-rounded form is rarely found. Some fine age cracks in ivory, otherwise very good condition. Cord channel through a dowel on the back.
