A VICTORIAN GILT BRONZE AND PAINTED PORCELAIN MOUNTED CALAMANDER BOOKSTAND, BY THOMAS SIMPSON & CO, 154 REGENT ST., LONDON, THIRD QUARTER 19TH CENTURY, of rectangular form centering hinged panel book ends with angled borders enclosing engraved stylized curling oak tree branch mounts framing a raised conforming panel having a polychrome painted oval porcelain plaque with scantily clad cherubs, within matching engraved bronzes, on base fitted slides, flanking an engraved bronze plaque "T.A.. SIMPSON 154 REGENT STREET," set within the similarly decorated base with one end having a tab handle centering engraved details and "SELF CLOSING BOOK SLIDE" above "2704." Height: 8" Width: 16" Depth: 7" NOTE: T. A. Simpson & Co. (Thomas Simpson): goldsmiths and jewelers as well as manufacturers/retailers of various types of boxes including writing and library related ephemera .
