[Manuscript/Ship's Log/Travel Diary] 2 Manuscripts.
++ Log of the Brig S. P. Smith of Bath, ME, Jan. 30, 1874 to July 3, 1874; Nov. 9, 1874 to Apr. 2, 1875 and 1 leaf from Sept. 1875. Smith sailed from New York to Ponce, Puerto Rico, back to New York, to Mayaguez, PR and back to Baltimore; then to Portsmouth, NH, to Bangor, ME, to New York, then Coruna, Spain. The S. P. Smith carried molasses and sugar from Puerto Rico, and on the voyage to Spain carried oil. Includes accounts of gales and heavy seas. Records are by several hands. Entries routinely provide wind direction and ship’s course, 4 entries per page. Each page includes longitude and latitude. Early in the log barometric pressure is recorded (almost always over 30.00), but this practice was discontinued. Ship's name is from a modern pencil notation on inside of front cover. Folio. Disbound. [64]pp still present, plus 4 pages covered by newspaper/magazine clippings. 2 leaves with small portion of text clipped. Stained, occasionally affecting legibility. ++ A Voyage around Cape Horn to California. [Manuscript.] The author is travelling with his fellow artists, after visiting Europe and Russia. The artists were sailing to California with 30 others. Incl. account of dispute between sailor and French passenger, leading the Frenchman to successfully pick a fight (pp3-4). [6]pp, 8vo. Docketed “by Charles Goss of Ipswich, Mass.,” by another hand on blank leaf in pencil. Very good.
