Genova: (Girolamo Bartoli), 1590. 21 full-page engravings. (Engr title plus 1 preceding each of 20 cantos). 1st illustrated edition of Tasso’s Jerusalem Delivered. Has “debbiano” in Canto 4, Stanza 1, line 2 [p35] and “stimate” at top of p48 (Canto 5, Stanza 4, line 1).
[1]-11, [1]; I-255, [1 blank]; Annotationi I-71, [1]; [1]-40; Contents [1]-[8] pp. Collation: [6 prelim leaves], A-Q8; A-D8, E-E4; A-B8, C-C4, [4 Contents leaves], in 8’s. Engravings accounted for in signings and pagination. M4 mis-signed “L4.” Page [251] is “151,”p[254] is “246.” Misnumbered page “33” corrected to “43” (possibly for the printer, possibly by a reader). A few headlines are similarly hand corrected, as are a few stanza numbers in the Annotationi. Other old ink marginalia are definitely from a reader. 8vo. Full leather with gilt decorated spine, sprinkled edges. Spine chipped, top 2 spine panels loose, joints split. Foxing, occasional dampstains. Discoloration to lower portion of pp61-63. Repair to Vol I, pp[1] and 174, not affecting legibility. Marginal pencil to B3v. Contents very good plus. 2
