Description
Flemish Painter, mid-16th century
Dimensions: 31.5 x 20.2 cm
Wide wooden frame: 39 x 49 cm
Verso on the plate with handwritten Dutch label 29-12-1944
The beautiful painting is a graceful and intimate representation of the Virgin and Child. She holds the child with her left arm while she points to it with her right hand. This type of representation, which evolved from the icon painting and was then taken over in the panel painting, is considered the most sublime view of the Mother of God and is also called Hodegetria (wayfinder). The Chist child is holding cherries in his left hand and is grasping for a flower with his right hand.
Condition:
The painting is in overall very good condition and shows only light craquelée in the bright areas of the image. The outer edges of the panel have little traces of use due to the frame. The inspection under UV light reveals extensive areas of retouching. The frame is also in a very good condition and shows only minimum trace of use. (hth)
