Description
A large Roman provincial marble personal altar with inscription, c. 1st - 2nd Century AD, the front depicting two standing figures in relief, one of which appears to be Herakles. On opposite sides are well-cut inscriptions in Greek, the first reading IO/TTOC/CEITA and the other KAPM/EPKOY/PIOCY/TOC; the back portion of the altar is blank. The altar rests on a stepped base with bottom extended for attachment into a base of another substance, the top with a recessed square area bordered by raised edges decorated with floral element radiating away from a male bust which is above the scene containing the two figures. A handsome piece with much eye appeal and light surface deposits. H: 6 1/2 in (16.6cm). Ex collection of William Major Tedder.
