Description
first English edition, with accompanying original ink drawing by Kipling, signed and initialed , on tipped-in card, advertisements, some toning and minor marking to ff., ownership stamps of Mary Phillips on verso of front free endpaper, original blue cloth, gilt, edge wear, some marking to upper cover, shelf lean, [Livingston 100], 8vo, Macmillan , 1893. The original ink drawing present features a cat on a wall with its back arched and hackles raised, whilst in the fore-ground is some seated animal with its back to the viewer, possibly a baby elephant the drawing is inscribed "For Mrs Mary Phillips from Rudyard Kipling. With apologies for the[ ]" followed by what seems to be a cannon-shot or similar shooting past. The drawing is also inscribed "RK del. / M. 1897 / RÞan", presumably Rottingdean, Devon, where Kipling and his family lived at that time. There is also on the same sheet a hazy (to indicate motion) pencil image of a couple riding a tandem bicycle, but no indication of artist.
