Carved with Sakyamuni and Prabhutaratna seated on a lotus throne flanked by two Bodhisattvas within a recessed arched niche, the rectangular plinth with two lions flanking an incense burner, the reverse with a dated inscription, dated to the 3rd year of Shangyuan (762 A.D.), Tang Dynasty, rosewood stand, in overall good condition, see images for more details, private Manhattan collection, 13 1/4" high (with stand), 11 3/4" high (stele only)*Steles made of this type of blackish looking limestones are likely to have come Qingzhou area in Shandong Province.
