Description
Small painting of a mythological - fairy tale scene by Dooley Dionysius (1907 - 1996). Circa 1935. Gouache on thin board, laid onto a silver paper border and toned rice paper background. Framed. Signed by the artist, lower right “DIONYSIUS”. Beautifully detailed and composed with a castle on a river in the background and Egyptian or Mesopotamian servants guiding a royal carriage, pulled by mythological horned animals. The King or Queen is in the carriage, a monkey is riding on top, and a guard is shooting a bow and arrow. May be an illustration for a book.

NOTES: H.G. “Dooley” Dionysius was born in Saint Louis, Missouri on June 17, 1907. He graduated from the St. Louis School of Fine Arts in 1925. While a resident of Los Angeles in 1930-40, he worked in the art department of Disney Studios, and was the author-illustrator of “Black Opal” and “Mother Goose Rhymes”. His subject matter was mostly taken from mythology and fairy tales. He was a resident of Kirkwood, Missouri until his death in 1996. Exhibited: California Watercolor Society, 1930; Los Angeles County Museum of Art, 1930, 1931; Saint Louis Art Guild, 1932. Works Held: St Louis Public Library.
