Description
Print from steel engraving titled „Pierre III Fedorowitz. Empereur de Russie, le 5 Janvier 1762, detrone et etrangle en Juillet 1762“.

From the Histoire de Catherine II, Imperatrice de Russie. Par J. Castera. Paris. 1793.

Artist A. Tardieu Direxit.

Notes: Tom. I. Page 192.

Peter III (21 February 1728 – 17 July [O.S. 6 July] 1762) (Russian: Пётр III Фëдорович, Pyotr III Fyodorovich) was Emperor of Russia for six months in 1762. He was born as Karl Peter Ulrich, son of the Duke of Holstein-Gottorp. The German Peter could hardly speak Russian and pursued a strongly pro-Prussian policy, which made him an unpopular leader. He was likely assassinated as a result of a conspiracy led by his German wife Princess Sophie Friederike Auguste von Anhalt-Zerbst-Dornburg, who succeeded him to the throne as Catherine II.
